Detroit Diesel 8.2L Engine Specifications & Applications

Overview of the Detroit Diesel 8.2L “Fuel Pincher” Engine

The Detroit Diesel 8.2L is a unique and compact V8, four-stroke diesel engine that was introduced during the fuel economy-focused era of the late 1970s and early 1980s. Known informally as the “Fuel Pincher,” the 8.2L was engineered to deliver competitive fuel economy in a lightweight and compact package—especially for Class 5–7 vehicles and medium-duty power applications.

Unlike traditional two-stroke Detroit Diesels, the 8.2L is a four-stroke engine with wet cylinder liners, allowing for in-frame rebuilds and improved serviceability. Available in both naturally aspirated and turbocharged versions, it delivers between 170 and 250 horsepower with torque outputs approaching 500 lb-ft, making it suitable for marine auxiliary engines, irrigation pumps, gensets, and stationary industrial use.

Diesel Pro Power supports the 8.2L engine with a full line of aftermarket parts, overhaul kits, and maintenance components, ensuring continued performance for legacy applications still running this platform.

Key Features of the Detroit 8.2L Engine

The 8.2L is Detroit Diesel’s only factory-built four-stroke V8 and was ahead of its time in prioritizing fuel efficiency, weight reduction, and rebuildability. Although no longer produced, the engine remains in use across thousands of industrial and marine platforms due to its simplicity and cost-effective maintenance.

Engine Benefits:

  • Full mechanical fuel system with no electronic controls

  • Wet liners enable affordable in-frame rebuilds

  • Compact V8 footprint ideal for space-constrained applications

  • Easily serviceable with standard diesel tools

  • Supported by a robust aftermarket parts ecosystem

Applications of the Detroit Diesel 8.2L Engine

Despite its original design for commercial trucks and buses, the 8.2L engine became a popular solution for repower and OEM use in marine, agricultural, and industrial applications. It’s especially useful in scenarios where moderate power output, mechanical reliability, and service simplicity are critical.

Marine Applications

Marine technicians have long favored the Detroit 8.2L for its torque curve and compact size, making it a reliable auxiliary or propulsion engine in small vessels.

Common Marine Uses:

  • Marine generators (gensets)

  • Hydraulic power units

  • Auxiliary power for workboats

  • Small tugboats and pushboats

  • Sailboat propulsion

Marine Advantages:

  • Compact engine bay footprint

  • Excellent fuel economy at continuous load

  • Compatible with heat exchanger and keel-cooled systems

  • Can be rebuilt without engine removal
