Cooler Maintenance For Twin Disc MG-5090A Marine Gear

April 3, 2025

The oil cooler keeps the transmission operating within safe temperature ranges. Marine environments often introduce scale, salt, and debris into the cooling circuit.

  1. Isolate and remove the oil cooler from the vessel’s water and oil lines.
  2. Flush with fresh water and descaling solution.
  3. Backflush to dislodge debris and inspect for leaks.
  4. Pressure test the cooler to 30 PSI to check for integrity.
  5. Replace any failing lines or corroded hose clamps.

Cooler failure is a leading cause of transmission damage—never skip this step during annual maintenance.
