️ 4 Reasons Your Detroit Diesel Engine May Be Overheating | DIESELPRO.COM
Overheating is one of the most serious issues a Detroit Diesel engine can face, and catching it early is critical to avoiding expensive repairs or catastrophic damage. In this video, Diesel Pro Power outlines four of the most common reasons your two-stroke Detroit Diesel—like a 6V71, 8V71, 6V92, 8V92, or even 60 Series engine—might be running hotter than normal.
Whether your engine is used in a truck, generator, or marine vessel, this video provides a fast and easy-to-understand visual guide to help you identify the most likely causes of cooling system failure.

4 Common Causes of Overheating:
Failed Freshwater Pump
If the engine’s circulating water pump (freshwater pump) fails, coolant will no longer circulate through the engine block, causing immediate overheating.
Failed Raw Water Pump (Marine Engines Only)
In marine engines, the raw water pump draws in seawater to cool the engine via a heat exchanger. If this pump fails, external cooling is lost, leading to rapid overheating.
Failed Thermostat or Thermostat Seal
A stuck-closed thermostat or a leaking thermostat seal can block coolant from flowing through the radiator or heat exchanger, disrupting temperature regulation.
Clogged Radiator or Heat Exchanger (Marine Engines Only)
In land-based engines, a clogged radiator restricts airflow and coolant circulation. In marine engines, fouled or salt-blocked heat exchangers prevent proper cooling water flow.
These four issues account for a significant percentage of overheating cases seen in the field. This video is designed to help you spot the problem early and take corrective action before serious damage occurs.
