Guide for Customers Sending Detroit Diesel Blower Cores for Inspection & Core Deposit Refunds

When returning a Detroit Diesel blower core to Diesel Pro Power, Inc., it is important to understand exactly what qualifies as a rebuildable core and how to properly prepare your blower for shipment. The inspection process is strict because rebuilt blower assemblies require precise foundational components. Returning a core that is incomplete, damaged, or beyond repair will result in the forfeiture of the core deposit and may also cost you unnecessary freight charges.

This expanded guide explains, step-by-step, how to evaluate your blower core before shipping it back, what conditions typically lead to acceptance or rejection, and how to avoid preventable expenses.

Before Sending Your Blower Core

Customers are responsible for all freight charges when sending blower cores back to Diesel Pro Power, Inc. Because only rebuildable blower cores are eligible for refunds, we strongly encourage you to carefully review the guidelines below before shipping anything.

If you deem that it is worth sending your core back to Diesel Pro Power, Inc. use THIS LINK to process a Returns Of Goods Authorization Form, which will give you further information on how to return your core and notify us that you have the intention of returning it.

1. Check for Completeness

A Detroit Diesel blower core must be complete in order to be considered rebuildable. Missing components often result in automatic rejection.

Please ensure that your blower includes:

  • Both rotors

  • Both end plates

  • Drive gear assembly

  • All caps, fittings, inspection covers, and hardware

  • Any internal springs, seals, or shafts that were part of the original assembly

If any major component is missing—especially the rotors or end plates—the core cannot be rebuilt. Even small missing parts may prevent the blower from passing inspection.

This blower core was returned with large visible chunks out of the blower rotors. The blower did not have to be disassembled to see that the it was not rebuildable.

2. Inspect for Physical Damage

Blowers are precision-machined components. Structural damage usually makes a core unusable, and it can be identified even before disassembly.

Check the blower carefully for:

  • Cracked or broken housings

  • Severely bent or fractured rotor shafts

  • Broken or missing rotor lobes

  • Impact damage from foreign objects

  • Chunks missing from rotors or end plates

Visible damage like this almost always results in rejection.

For example:

  • A blower core returned with large chunks missing from the rotors is not rebuildable.

  • A blower with a section of the housing broken out or a rotor lobe fractured cannot be machined and reused.

These issues are identifiable without opening the blower. If you can see major physical damage with the naked eye, the core is not suitable for rebuild.

This blower had a chunk of metal missing. This core is not rebuildable.

3. Assess Wear, Scoring, and Corrosion

Even if the blower is physically intact, extreme wear or corrosion may render it unusable.

Please inspect the following areas:

Housing

  • Heavy scoring

  • Deep scratches

  • Grooves worn into internal surfaces

  • Pitting or rust

Rotors

  • Wear on rotor tips

  • Corrosion on rotor surfaces

  • Flaking or pitting

  • Evidence of metal-to-metal contact

End Plates

  • Deep wear rings

  • Cracks

  • Corrosion around bearing seats

Blowers with severe internal wear cannot meet factory tolerances and are typically not rebuildable.

4. Ensure the Correct Blower Core Is Being Returned

Only the exact model of blower that corresponds to your purchase can be credited.

Blowers that may look similar—or come from a different displacement Detroit Diesel engine—will not be accepted. For example, a blower from a 6-71 cannot be credited toward a core charge for a 12V-71 blower, even if the housings look comparable.

Returning the wrong blower core results in:

  • No refund

  • Lost freight cost

  • Possible need to ship the correct core later

Verify your model before shipping.

5. Packaging Requirements for Blower Cores

Proper packaging protects the blower from shipping damage. Even a rebuildable core can be rejected if it is damaged from poor packaging.

Follow these guidelines:

  • Use a heavy-duty box or crate capable of supporting the blower’s weight.

  • Wrap the blower tightly in protective material to prevent shifting.

  • Reinforce the bottom of the box with extra cardboard or wood.

  • Seal all sides securely.

  • Add internal padding to protect end plates and rotor shafts.

Blowers damaged during transit due to inadequate packaging cannot be accepted.

6. Overseas Customer Notes

If you are shipping a blower core from outside the United States, please be aware of the following:

  • You are responsible for all freight, customs fees, and import duties.

  • Inspect your blower extra carefully before shipping due to higher transportation costs.

  • Ensure all documentation is correctly completed to avoid delays or rejection at customs.

Because international shipments cost more, it is especially important to evaluate your blower closely using this guide before sending it.

7. Return Your Blower Core Within 30 Days

Customers have 30 days from the date of order to return their blower core to Diesel Pro Power, Inc. Returns received after this period may not be eligible for a refund, even if the core is rebuildable.

If additional time is needed due to shipping complications, please contact us before the 30-day window closes.

8. If You Are Unsure, Send Us a Picture First

If you have any doubts about whether your blower core is rebuildable, Diesel Pro Power encourages you to send photos before shipping.

  • If you worked with a sales representative, email them directly with images.

  • If you placed your order online, send pictures to sales@dieselpro.com.

Good photos can save you from unnecessary shipping costs if the blower is clearly non-rebuildable.
