Parts for Detroit Diesel 6-71 Turbo – Blower Section

The Detroit Diesel 6-71 Turbo combines the classic Series 71 two-stroke architecture with turbocharging for stronger mid-range torque, improved scavenging, and cleaner operation. On these engines, the Roots-type blower still does the heavy lifting for air scavenging, while the turbocharger boosts overall airflow. Keeping the blower, its drive, and all sealing surfaces in top form is essential to preserve turbo response, balance airbox pressure, and protect the rotors and gears from premature wear.

Rebuilt 6-71 Turbo Blowers (Left-Hand & Right-Hand)

Choose the orientation that matches your engine:

  • Left-Hand (LH) Blower – Mounted on the left side when viewed from the flywheel.

  • Right-Hand (RH) Blower – Mounted on the right side when viewed from the flywheel.

Every rebuilt unit is completely disassembled, cleaned, inspected, and assembled with new bearings, seals, and gaskets. Rotor timing and end clearances are set to factory spec so the blower works in harmony with the turbo, delivering crisp throttle response and strong scavenging. Units are sold with a refundable core deposit for cost savings and sustainability.

Fitment tip: Always match the original LH/RH placement to keep your governor, intake ducting, and accessory drive aligned without modification.

Blower Repair & Installation Kits (Turbo)

Blower Repair Kit – Series 71 (Turbo)

A targeted internal refresh for turbo applications. Replacing wear items (bearings, seals, end gaskets, and related small parts) restores pressure integrity, lowers rotor leakage, and quiets gear mesh—critical on turbocharged 6-71 engines that rely on tight air control.

Blower Installation Gasket Kit – 6-71 By-Pass Turbo

Designed for by-pass turbo configurations, this kit includes the correct profiles and thicknesses to maintain proper airbox sealing and by-pass passages. Correct gasket stack height preserves rotor clearances and turbo spool characteristics.

Blower Installation Gasket Kit – 6-71 (General)

A comprehensive install set for non by-pass front cover arrangements. Use during final assembly to prevent unmetered air leaks and oil migration into the air stream.

Coupling, Shafts & Drive Hardware

Blower Coupling (Thin 48-Spline)

Precision-machined to the thin 48-spline interface, this coupling transfers torque from the gear/accessory drive to the blower input with minimal backlash. A tight, concentric fit reduces vibration, protects bearings, and keeps blower timing consistent under load.

Blower Shafts for 6-71

Multiple lengths support various front covers and marine stacks:

  • 48-spline shaft ~12.125"

  • 48-spline shaft ~11.06"

  • 48-spline shaft ~12.00" (Marine with Allison gear)

Using the correct length preserves spline engagement, prevents edge loading, and maintains alignment with hubs and couplings.

Blower Shaft Retainer

Locks axial position so the shaft cannot walk under heat cycles or thrust loads—small part, big insurance.

Accessory/Hub Components

  • Hydraulic Pump Drive Hub (in-line 71) – Couples the blower shaft to aluminum hydraulic pumps on marine and industrial rigs.

  • Hub for Blower Rotor Gear – Maintains precise gear timing and smooth mesh for quiet, efficient operation.

Lubrication Tubes & Oil Supply

  • Tube Assembly – Blower Drive Lubrication
Feeds the blower drive bearing with steady oil supply for long life at sustained RPM.

  • Oil Supply Tube – Governor Drive
Stabilizes governor operation by ensuring consistent lubrication, which supports steady idle and precise speed control.

Service note: Replace hardened tube seals and verify clean passages whenever the blower or governor drive is removed.

Gaskets for Turbo Airbox Integrity

Airtight sealing is mandatory on two-stroke turbos. Refresh these during any blower service:

  • Blower Drive Gear Cover Gasket – Seals the gear cavity from the airbox.

  • Blower Screen Gasket (6-71) – Seats the inlet screen to keep debris out of the rotors.

  • Blower-to-Block Gasket (6-71) – Primary airbox seal; essential for maintaining boost and scavenging.

  • Blower & Striker Plate Gasket (6-71) – Correct thickness prevents air bypass at the plate.

  • Governor Gaskets (Drive, Housing, Spring Cover, Cap) – Keep oil in and air out for stable governing and clean exterior surfaces.

Seals, Sleeves & Drive Cover Hose

  • Blower Oil Seal (Turbo-grade) – Prevents oil from entering the intake charge; critical for clean turbo operation.

  • Seal Sleeve (Series 71/92) – Restores a smooth sealing surface if the original shaft is grooved.

  • Blower Drive Cover Hose (~2.75" × ~0.95") – Replace aging rubber to eliminate seeps and preserve a clean front cover.

Marine Silencer & Air Intake

  • Marine Silencer (6-71) – Reduces intake roar in engine rooms without choking airflow; ideal for vessels where comfort and communication matter.

  • Industrial Air Cleaner (4" inlet) – High-efficiency filtration protects rotor tips and end plates from abrasive wear in dusty sites.

Fitment reminder: Confirm inlet diameter, body diameter, and height against your cowl or hatch for painless installation.

Air Box Breather & Governor Interface

  • Air Box Breather Valve Assembly – Manages crankcase ventilation into the airbox to reduce oil carry-over and sustain clean intake charge.

  • Hydraulic Governor Gasket – Thin interface gasket that prevents oil migration and stabilizes idle quality.

Electrical Shutdown Control

  • Shutdown Solenoid – 12V

  • Shutdown Solenoid – 24/32V

Provides positive fuel cut for routine and emergency shutdowns—vital for protecting engines, turbos, and driveline equipment.

Control Cable Terminals (Marine)

  • Teleflex/Morse Ball-Joint Terminal (¼", 43C) – Swiveling end for smooth governor/throttle geometry.

  • Teleflex/Morse Clevis Terminal (¼", 43C) – Rigid pin joint where a positive, lash-free connection is preferred.

Corrosion-resistant construction stands up to salt and humidity—replace worn ends to eliminate throttle slop and surging.

Appearance & Assembly Aids

  • Detroit Green Engine Paint – The classic finish that also helps spot new leaks after service.

  • High-Tack Gasket Spray – Enhances adhesion of paper/composite gaskets around the blower, airbox, and covers—especially helpful on seasoned castings.
